For the past week, our TV screens have been filled with scenes of stressed health workers, tearful stories of loved ones lost, and lives disrupted by warlike orders to stay at home and keep your distance from neighbors. If we haven’t appreciated how serious a COVID-19 infection can be, we do now. We’ve learned that age is not a predictor, though the consequences of infection are more dire for some than others. We know the disease can be life-threatening. And we’ve been told that the best defense is handwashing and keeping our distance from fellow residents—with distance a particular challenge for some and a cause of frustration among our police, who must enforce it.
Gov. Charlie Baker and the experts advising him predict a surge in cases in Massachusetts in the next week or two. Now’s the time to follow the advice of the White House task force, the state, and our town leaders: Stay at home, save a life.
