For any voter who wants a voice in choosing a Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, or Green-Rainbow candidate for U.S. president or for state representative for the 37th Middlesex District, March 3, this coming Tuesday, is a time to stand and be counted. It’s called Super Tuesday for a reason. Voters in Massachusetts and 13 other states will vote for the candidates they want to see on their party’s ballot for November’s presidential election. That includes voters registered as unenrolled, a popular designation in Harvard. If you’re in that category, you get to choose the primary in which you wish to participate. With 15 candidates on the Democratic ballot, seven of whom have already dropped out of the race, the results could be decisive. For Republican, Green-Rainbow, and Libertarian voters, there are fewer choices, but the primary is your chance to affirm your candidate.
And if the presidential primary leaves you cold, everyone should care about the special state primary to choose candidates to run for the 37th Middlesex District seat vacated by Jennifer Benson. On the Republican ballot, the choice is between Malena Chastain and Cathy Clark. Dina Samfield and Dan Sena are competing for the Democratic nomination. We profiled all four in last week’s issue of the Harvard Press. Voters will choose between the Republican and Democratic winner in a March 31 special state election.
The right to vote is the backbone of our democracy. We’ll be headed to the Bromfield Cafeteria next Tuesday to cast our ballots. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. We hope to see you there.
