On Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m., the Shirley Historical Society will present a program at the Shirley Senior Center, 9 Parker Road, celebrating the birthday of Benton MacKaye who spent his boyhood in Shirley and retired there in 1945. MacKaye gained fame as a pioneer in forestry, regional planning, and conservation, and is best known as the father of the Appalachian Trail.
