Bromfield girls win district track meet for second straight year

The Bromfield girls track team won the MIAA Division 2 District E Championship meet for the second year in a row, placing first among 22 teams Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Fitchburg High School competition. The boys team placed 12th.

Members of the girls team were top finishers in nine events. In the 1-mile run, senior Tess McClain placed first with a time of 5 minutes, 28.80 seconds while junior Helena Justicz placed fifth with a time of 5:51.05. Senior Liza Toll placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.77 seconds. Senior Sam Schoenberg placed first in the 300-meter dash with a time of 43.79. In the 1000-meter, junior Hannah Beckman ran a time of 3:24.02, placing second. Junior Claire Stoddard placed fourth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:45.96. Freshman Molly Squire placed fifth in the 2-mile race with a time of 13:02.21.

In the 4×200-meter relay, Stoddard, junior Dharma Cooper, Toll, and Schoenberg were first with a time of 1:58.29. In the 4×800-meter relay, Beckman, McClain, Justicz, and Squire placed first with a time of 10:39.81. Schoenberg was also a winner in the high jump event, clearing a height of 5 feet, 2 inches to take first place.

One member of the boys team placed at the district meet. Junior Jordan Colon was second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.93.

On Sunday, Feb. 9, three Bromfield athletes competed in a meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston as a final chance to qualify for the state meet. Jordan Colon ran a school record time of 6.86 in the 55-meter dash, surpassing the previous record of 6.90 run by Roniel Foster in 2011. In the high jump Schoenberg placed second, clearing a height of 5-2. Stoddard placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 15-9 1/2 .

Individuals from both the girls and boys teams will compete at the MIAA Division 5 State Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Feb 16, at 1 p.m.
