In towns like Harvard, where police officers spend most of their time in a cruiser, most residents don’t have much personal interaction with local law enforcement officers. We want them to respond quickly in an emergency, and to slow speeding drivers, and to catch criminals. But we don’t think of them as people with something valuable to teach us about how to conduct our daily lives.
By all accounts, Chief Ed Denmark’s recent presentation on the subject of bias was a transformative event. Denmark knows a lot about bias from both personal and professional experience. He knows the damage it can do, and was able to convey a powerful message about the ways in which we all form biased opinions, and sometimes act on them with tragic results.
