Chloe Scornavacca led the girls basketball team to its first league win Jan. 23. With a final score of 43-33, the Trojans beat the Clinton Gaels (3-10, 1-4) on their home court, raising their record to 8-5.
Playing post, sophomore Scornavacca led the scoring with a total of 14 points, 10 of which came from field goals. Fellow sophomore Talia Dutkewych and senior Callie Frackiewicz followed closely behind with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Together they contributed more than four-fifths of the final score.
“Great athletes make coaches look good,” said Bromfield Coach Bob Miller in an interview following the game. He attributed the win to the team’s defensive efforts and perseverance, saying, “We tend to go one speed, which is pedal to the metal.”
However, the team’s passionate defense and vigorous offense earned the Trojans 12 fouls in the first half and seven in the second. There are six new players this season. These newer girls, including some experienced lacrosse players, are great athletes and important additions to the team, said Miller, but they are still learning the fundamentals of basketball and its rules.
The Gaels were awarded 25 free throws, but failed to sink more than 50% of their shots, allowing Bromfield to keep its lead throughout the game, with an edge of 32-21 at halftime.
Though Clinton scored the first point two minutes into the game, the Trojans scored seconds later with a layup from Dutkewych, who went on to score four more field goals throughout the game.
Frackiewicz racked up seven points from free throws, six in the second half, which helped push Bromfield ahead.
Sophomore Annabel Ashe and junior Olivia Kehoe scored the remaining six points. Ashe notched a field goal in the second quarter and two points from free throws in the third. Kehoe netted a field goal in the second quarter.
Coach Miller has high hopes for the team and believes the girls can reach their goal of 10 wins this season, which would qualify the team to participate in the league championship.
