Brush burning permits
now available
Brush burning permits are now available. Register online at www.massfire.net/brush/harvard.php to register and pay the $10 fee. If you created an account last year, you may use the same information this year.
Each day you wish to burn during the open burning season, Jan. 15 through May 1, you must call 351-333-5090 during the hours of 8 a.m. to noon to learn if open burning is allowed that day. If it is, you can follow the prompts on the phone to activate your permit. Fires must be completely extinguished by 4 p.m.
For persons with limited computer access, permits can be purchased at the police station, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Call Trish at 978-456-8276 with any questions.
February vacation eco-adventures for kids
Seven- to 10-year-olds are invited to participate in the Nashua River Watershed Association’s (NRWA) Eco-Adventures during February vacation week. The eco-adventures will run Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 18 to 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main Street (Rt. 119) in Groton. Explore the outdoors in winter and play active games. Learn how local animals prepare for, and survive, the winter months. Hunt for tracks and other signs of animal, bird, and insect activity. Make ice art, whatever the weather! Each day will feature physical activity, creative projects, and time for reflection. Choose to attend one, two, or three days. The cost for NRWA family members is $55 per day; $65 per day for nonmembers. Preregistration is required; space is limited. Volunteer Fair seeks participants
The League of Women Voters (LWVHarvard.org) will sponsor a Volunteer Fair Saturday, Feb. 8 (snow date Feb. 15), 1 to 3 p.m. in Volunteers Hall. The purpose of the Volunteer Fair is to match volunteers with organizations. If you are involved with a club, town committee, sports group, youth group, etc. looking for members, we welcome your participation. 2020 assessments are online, abatement requests due Feb. 3
Property values for 2020 are now online, and abatement applications must be filed with the assessor by Monday, Feb. 3. Abatement applications and instructions are available on the town website or at Town Hall.
To access your property value online, go to the town website, click on “Departments,” “Assessors,” “Online Property Data Look-up,” and “Enter Online Database.” There you can enter your name or address to see a record that contains your property value (land and building), a description of your house and its condition, and your property value from the two previous years.
Fourth of July
volunteers needed!
Our tradition of having T-shirts for Harvard’s Fourth of July is at risk. We do not have enough volunteers to run the two-day celebration and sell T-shirts. If you would like to see this 20-year tradition continue, please contact Anne Hentz at anne@annehentz.com. Giving an hour or two of your time can make all the difference.
Donate a boat and get a two-year season pass!
The Parks and Recreation Commission will have a Boat Rental Kiosk at the town beach this year. Rates will be lower than renting a canoe/kayak rack, and there are already some boats in the fleet. Boat donations are needed. If you would rather not deal with your boat(s) anymore, please consider making a donation. Those owners whose boats are selected will receive a two-year season pass good for four-hour trips every day with a variety of canoes, kayaks, and paddle-boards. Census Bureau is hiring
The Census Bureau is hiring up to 500,000 temporary, part-time census takers for the 2020 Census in communities across the country. Jobs offer competitive wages that are paid weekly, flexible hours, and paid training. Authorized expenses, such as mileage, are reimbursed for employees doing field work. Early voting for the March 3, 2020, presidential primary and special state primary will be held in the town clerk’s office Feb. 24 through Feb. 27.
