The Bromfield girls and boys track teams competed in seven events at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Coaches Small School Invitational Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Two relay teams and three individuals were among the top finishers at the event, which drew scores of athletes from eastern Massachusetts. The girls 4×200-meter relay team—seniors Samantha Schoenberg and Liza Toll, junior Claire Stoddard, and sophomore Pariss Eanglee—placed second with a time of 1 minute 50.64 seconds. In the girls 4×800- meter relay, eighth-grader Molly Squire, juniors Hannah Beckman, Helena Justicz, and Kaitlyn Ostrowski placed third with a time of 10:21.65. Schoenberg placed second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 4 inches. Stoddard placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet 6.5 inches. Junior Beckman placed fifth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:11.50.
Toll placed 11th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.72 seconds. In the 300-meter dash junior Cole O’Neil placed 21st with a time of 37.78 seconds and junior Jordan Colon placed 28th with a time of 38.24 seconds.
In addition to the invitational meet, senior Tess McClain competed at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, placing seventh in the junior girls mile with a time of 4:57.75.
In their last regular meet of the season, Bromfield girls track team outpaced Ayer-Shirley 65-25 at a meet held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Shrewsbury High School. The girls placed in 11 events. The Bromfield boys team lost 69-18, placing in six events.
Assistant Coach Ellis Toll explained how athletes are chosen to run certain events at each meet. “We do it a little differently for every meet … we base it off of our opponent.” For example, the coaches will enter runners in events according to where they anticipate the other team will enter their strongest athletes. In some situations, team members can give input into which events they want to compete in. During a meet like Saturday’s invitational, where the goal was to qualify as many athletes as possible for the upcoming state competition, athletes are entered in events where they are most likely to achieve this goal.
The Midland-Wachusett D League Championship will take place Friday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. at Fitchburg High School.
