Transfer Station
Hours of operation at the Transfer Station have been extended. They are now 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
Volunteers needed for Commission on Disability
At the Oct. 28 Special Town Meeting, the town voted to accept the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 8J to establish a five-member Commission on Disability. Commissions consist of no fewer than five members chosen by the Select Board. The majority must be persons with disabilities; one may be a member of the immediate family of a person with a disability; one must be an elected or appointed municipal official. Girl Scout Mitten Tree
The annual Girl Scout Mitten Tree is up in the Children’s Room at the Harvard Public Library. This year the mittens and other items will be donated to Cradles to Crayons to provide children from birth through age 12 living in homeless or low-income situations in and around Boston with the essential items they need to thrive at home, at school, and at play. Stop by the library now through Dec. 11 with mittens, gloves, scarves, and caps for the mitten tree. Harvard Girl Scouts thanks everyone for their support to keep children warm this winter. NRWA online auction bidding closes Dec. 6
The Nashua River Watershed Association’s (NRWA) online auction at www.bid dingforgood.com/NashuaRiverWatershed will end Friday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. The auction provides a way to do some holiday shopping while supporting NRWA’s efforts to protect natural resources and provide environmental education programs in 32 watershed communities.
Holiday fire safety
Many holiday fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart.
- Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Discard light strands with frayed or pinched wires.
- Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry tree is dangerous because it can catch on fire easily.
- Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles.
- If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily.
