The Littleton Bromfield Tigers lost their first hockey game of the season to the non-league Dracut Tyngsboro Middies, 1-0, on Dec. 14 at the Salem Ice Center. The Tigers are a co-op team. Bromfield currently has seven players on the team, while Littleton has 11. The team has four captains, Littleton seniors Sean Mizzoni, Benjamin Canfield, and Nick Brown, and Bromfield senior Ben Hays.
The Tigers and Middies were evenly matched defensively, with Canfield saving 27 shots while Dracut’s goalie saved 28. The first period ended scoreless, but seven minutes into the second period, Dracut attackers pushed past Tiger defenders and fired a shot at Canfield. Canfield blocked the shot, but before the refs called it dead, the Middie attacker sent the puck toward the net again and this time scored off the rebound. In the third period, Bromfield fought to catch up, but was unable to score before the buzzer sounded.
“It’s a work in progress,” Bromfield sophomore forward Ryan McNulty said of the team’s performance. Canfield added, “We are getting better each time we hit the ice.”
Bromfield senior Henry Hays commented, “Although the loss was disappointing, I think that game was a good place to start. We definitely need more practice so we can improve, but overall, it was a good first game.”
With the Dec. 14 loss, the Tigers have a record of 0-1. Next up, the team will face off against Gardner Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Gardner Veterans Arena.
