Weeks of energetic debate and heightened citizen involvement culminated Tuesday in a vote by the Select Board to move ahead with its Complete Streets plan to redo sidewalks, street crossings, and parking in the town center. But in spite of its title, no one believes it’s a complete solution. Parking remains in short supply. The exit from the General Store to Mass. Ave. remains dangerous to pedestrians and customers of the CK Bikes store. The path from Bromfield School to the town center is unlit and in disrepair.
At their Tuesday meeting, Select Board members admitted as much and said solutions to these problems would be sought through future projects and grants, with opportunities for residents to weigh in. The 260 residents who signed a petition calling for a delay in the project were clearly not happy with the process that led to the current plan, a sentiment acknowledged by board member Rich Maiore. Chair Alice von Loesecke promised to do better. “We have to,” she said.
As the board moves on to future town center projects, we hope members will make good on that promise. Harvard residents value their common land. There are many stakeholders, some with an institutional interest, such as the Historical Commission or Parks and Recreation Commission, and others with a personal stake, such as homeowners around the Common. Lesson learned? When in doubt, reach out.
