With the recent approval of the Complete Streets proposal, I estimate that Harvard will be responsible for around 2,000 feet of sidewalks, including the sidewalks alongside the two school properties, around the public library, on the Common, from the Bromfield School up to the Congregational Church, and soon in front of the General Store and Congregational Church.
Sidewalks enhance the safety of pedestrians from motor vehicles. Because pedestrians are present and active all year, it is time to ask the Harvard DPW to clear snow off these walks in the winter months. If they already have the appropriate equipment, great! If not, I strongly recommend that the Select Board work with the DPW director to select the appropriate piece of power equipment for approval at the next Town Meeting.
The town should also repair the walkway that begins at the Bromfield School, runs alongside the Center Cemetery, and ends at the Congregational Church. The church’s section was rebuilt in 2008 and is in good condition. The town’s section is in terrible condition due to tree roots upheaving the surface. The walk from the Bromfield School parking lot to the church takes about 90 seconds; to the General Store is probably around 2 minutes. With its access path restored and maintained year-round, the Bromfield School lot can provide safe, convenient parking for visitors to the town center on nights and weekends, while also providing a safe path for students walking between the school and town center.
