Lorraine was the consummate public servant and a dear friend. Having worked with her for 10 years it was my pleasure to know her. She and I worked well together, and we also argued like “brother and sister” sometimes. But in the end, Harvard benefited. Harvard benefited greatly from her expertise and longevity in her position (finance director and school business officer).
After her retirement she helped us interview candidates to replace her, and then after that person moved on, she helped us find an interim person to do the job. As much as she loved her job, she enjoyed her family, dog, friends, and counting the days to retirement so she could spend more time being a grandmother and enjoying retirement. She found a countdown clock online and set it up on her computer to remind her how many days to retirement. Unfortunately her countdown to retirement was longer than her retirement. She will be sorely missed, and I have a lot to be thankful for having worked with her and to have had her as my friend.
