While many of us are still packing away our parkas, Harvard’s first locally grown crops are already being harvested. According to sources that know, strawberries are plentiful this year and available at local stands just in time to provide the red in your patriotic dessert. Carlson Orchards, 115 Oak Hill Road
Brookdale Fruit Farm strawberries, cucumbers, zucchini, and summer squash. Cherries aren’t quite ready for picking yet, but they will be soon; check carlsonorchards.com for updates. Some of last year’s apples are still available in the store, as is Carlson’s Oak Hill Blend hard cider, and its new Shandy Stand Blend, a mix of lemonade and hard cider.
Doe Orchards, 327 Ayer Road
The orchard usually opens around July 4 for pick-your-own blueberries and raspberries. Check doeorchards.com for updates.
Westward Orchards, 178 Massachusetts Avenue
Lettuce, kale, summer squash, zucchini, and lots of strawberries. Blueberry picking will likely start July 5; check westwardorchards.com for updates.
Willard Farm, 218 Still River Road
Some tomato, pepper, and basil plants still available.
