The Bromfield Trojans defeated the Gardner Wildcats 7-1 at a home game Monday, May 6, on their recently refurbished Pond Road field. The two teams were scoreless until the third inning when Bromfield earned a run. Gardner didn’t get any runs until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the third inning Bromfield senior Ethan Shipman began with a walk to first base. Next up to bat was senior Alex Magan, and while he was at bat, Shipman stole second. Magan was unable to get on base, but Shipman stole third before the next batter. Junior Clayton Hanlon hit a double and sent Shipman home for the first run of the game. No more players were able to make it onto bases before the end of the inning.
The fourth inning passed with neither team scoring. In the fifth, the Wildcats earned their only run of the game. Bromfield added to its lead in this inning with runs from Magan and junior Jake Elliott.
The sixth inning was Bromfield’s highest scoring inning. It began with sophomore Zack Pelak’s hit being caught in the outfield. But senior Lance Jarosz hit a single and stole second and third when teammate Shipman was at bat. Shipman earned a walk to first. While Magan was at bat, Shipman stole second. Magan sent both Jarosz and Shipman home with a double.
Later, Elliot sent both Magan and Hanlon home before the end of the inning, for a total of four runs. Gardner was unable to score any runs in the seventh inning. So the game concluded 7-1 Bromfield.
Notable Bromfield players were Jarosz and Magan. Jarosz pitched a complete game and struck out nine Gardner players. Magan was two for four at bat and earned two runs. Bromfield had a total of seven hits and no errors. Gardner had four hits and two errors.
This game left Bromfield’s overall record at 3-4 and its league record at 1-2. The team’s next game was scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, against Tyngsborough, away.
