Harvard police officers made five motor vehicle stops during the past week, of which three resulted in verbal warnings and one in a written warning or citation. Officers responded to seven medical emergency calls. One was a false alarm; in two others, the ambulance squad took a person to the hospital, one with Advanced Life Support on board. Police also issued or renewed two firearms permits. The week was notable for at least 18 calls about burglar, fire, and carbon monoxide alarms, many set off by high winds.
Tuesday, Feb. 26
With power out all over Harvard, an East Bare Hill Road resident called at 2:46 a.m. to see if the town was opening an emergency shelter for people without heat. The answer was no. Another call about the power outage came from someone on Brown Road at 3:04 a.m. An officer told the Press that anyone without a generator might consider keeping on hand a battery-powered room heater that uses a very small propane cylinder. At 7 p.m. a caller reported a one-car accident on Lancaster County Road near Cedar Ledge Road; no one was injured, and the vehicle was towed.
Wednesday, Feb. 27
A West Bare Hill Road resident called at 5:45 p.m. to report a case of fraud. At 6:16 p.m. someone on Candleberry Lane called to say a car parked at the foot of the long driveway had been honking its horn for several minutes. On arrival, police found that the car was not parked but had hit a tree; again, fortunately, no one was injured.
Thursday, Feb. 28
A West Bare Hill Road resident called at 9:20 a.m. to report that someone had opened a credit card in his name and used it to make purchases. At 12:28 p.m. an Old Littleton Road resident called to say a truck had driven up and down her driveway, packing down the snow and making it impossible to plow. Someone called at 1:25 p.m. about a speeding vehicle near the intersection of South Shaker and Ann Lees roads.
Friday, March 1
At 4:47 p.m. a Still River Road parent called with concerns because the children and their caregiver had not returned when expected. The group returned shortly thereafter. At 9:52 p.m. an officer noticed a vehicle parked on Brown Road and stopped to check on its driver, who turned out to be working on the nearby cell phone tower.
Saturday, March 2
A 911 caller at 8:37 a.m. reported a one-car accident on Finn Road near Withington Lane, telling police a tow truck was already on its way. An hour later, at 9:40 a.m., there was another one-vehicle accident, this time on Still River Road, when a truck went off the road and hit a tree. No one was injured in either crash, but both drivers received citations.
Sunday, March 3
At 3:06 p.m. someone called from Finn Road while walking his dog, saying he was being harassed by another dog that was acting aggressive. An officer responded and succeeded in getting the second dog onto a leash and then back to its home. A caller at 5:17 p.m. reported a speeding motorcycle on Prospect Hill Road, but the biker was gone when police arrived.
