The Bromfield Trojans defeated the Clinton Gaels 63-52 at home Tuesday night, Feb. 5. The boys will be heading to district play-offs.
In the opening minutes of the game, both teams fought for possession and failed to complete any shots. Finally, Bromfield junior Dylan Ashe was the first to score. Clinton quickly responded with a basket of its own, tying the score 2-2.
Both teams continued to struggle to hold on to the ball while players fell and grappled for the ball on the ground.
Bromfield made another basket and Clinton followed suit. Clinton stepped up with a 3-pointer, but Bromfield fired off three more baskets, including one 3-pointer in the last minute of the quarter. This raised the score to 11-7, Bromfield, and the Trojans held their lead for the rest of the game.
The Trojans scored 15 points in the next quarter, while the Gaels garnered only 8. With less than a second left, Bromfield junior Ryan Femino threw the ball, the buzzer went off, and the ball swooshed into the basket, making the score 26-15.
In the third quarter, Bromfield increased its lead. Clinton made 10 baskets, including one 3-pointer. But Bromfield also made 10 baskets, including two 3-pointers. This put the game at 46-32.
Although the Gaels outscored the Trojans in the final quarter, Bromfield kept up and the game ended 63-51.
Key players were senior Baylor Ashe, who scored a game-high 19 points; junior Nathan Rogers, who scored 18 points, collected 19 rebounds and had eight blocks; and freshman Jayden Ndjigue, who scored 13 points.
The Bromfield boys also had a win against Quabbin 37-35, away Friday night, Feb. 8. Although the game was close, Bromfield led throughout. High scorers were Baylor Ashe, who earned 12 points, and senior Charlie Bardenheuer, who earned 11 points.
Bromfield’s overall record is now 10-7. The Trojans were scheduled to play Lunenburg away Tuesday, Feb. 12.
