Girls finish 10th at state swimming championship; senior diver Sam Tonole wins silver

The Bromfield girls and boys swimming and diving team competed in the MIAA State Division 1 meet at Boston University Feb. 16 and 17. On Saturday the girls placed 10th overall with 88 points, while the boys placed 27th with 28 points on Sunday. Senior Sam Tonole earned a silver medal in the boys 1-meter dive with a score of 476.70.

The girls team was the only central Massachusetts and Mid-Wachusett League team to place in the top 10 overall. The girls team, consisting of sophomore Ella Church, junior Izzy Conners, sophomore Abby Boissy, senior Mia Hopman, Ayer-Shirley senior Madi Drew, ninth-grader Catherine Zhou, and eighth-grader Lily Tonole, competed in eight events on Saturday, including three relays. Church placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute 55.72 seconds, and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.47, a Bromfield team record. Conners also placed in two individual events, 16th in the 100-yard freestyle, and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.92. With a score of 394.65, Lily Tonole placed sixth in the 1-meter dive.

The boys team competed in four events. Junior Dwight Childers swam a time of 4:58.95 in the 500-yard freestyle to place eighth and rack up both a team and personal record. Junior Christopher Clark placed 27th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.23 seconds, and 25th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.22, both personal records. Next year Tonole with be competing in Fairfield University’s Division 1 diving program.

Coach Amy Gothorpe praised her team members for competing with “pride and determination.”
