Last Tuesday, Jan. 29, the Bromfield/North Middlesex ski team took to the hills of Nashoba Ski Area in Westford to compete in its fourth Bay West Alpha race of the season. The boys placed first with 458 points, and the girls were second in their meet with 418 points.

In the varsity girls race, a slalom, sophomore Evelyn Bagley came in sixth after a great race with a time of 28.87 seconds. Senior Sage McFarland followed close behind with a time of 29.85, earning an 11th-place finish. Isabel Barton finished 16th with a time of 30.97. Right behind her was sophomore Sadie Kieran in 17th place and a time of 31.13. Senior Anais Caro, ranked 37th, finished in 36.69. Junior Colleen Makosky had a time of 37.30 for a 40th-place finish.
Barton told the Press that her team has had “really great times this season,” especially those of new members. It’s been a year of having fun and one in which everyone has remained positive, she said.
Makosky is enthusiastic about her improvement and new skills this season. She said through the duration of training she has worked to perfect her rhythm and obtain better times. She said the girls have made tremendous efforts to improve their racing. Their overall score has improved to 13-14-1, currently ranking them fifth overall.

In the varsity boys slalom race, senior Jack Donaldson won with a fast time of 25.06. Following on the Bromfield team, junior Callum Hammill finished sixth with a time of 27.08.
Coincidentally, his time tied with the fifth-place finisher, sophomore Nick Antes, from Westford Academy. Senior Patrick Keiran finished 12th with a time of 28.85. Sophomore Alex Lebish, senior Justin Patenaude, and sophomore Gavin Maddalone finished 14th, 15th, and 16th, with close times of 28.95, 28.98 and 29.28, respectively.
In the varsity boys race, Joshua Boswell and Oscar Pride finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Boswell finished with a time of 32.66 and Pride finished in 33.93. Townsend Southard Pantano finished in 35.64, landing him in ninth place. Ben Brown ended in 36.99, putting him 13th overall. Thomas Diaconis and Mark McGinness finished respectively in 20th and 21st place with times of 41.92 and 42.06. George Shen finished 27th with a time of 49.75.
The coach, Raymond McCarthy, has high hopes for the remaining two races. “We have a very good chance of having all of our varsity boys and at least two or more of our varsity girls qualify for states,” he said in an email to the Press. He is looking forward to the competitions ahead while encouraging team members to remain humble, have fun, and better their skills on the slopes.
The fifth race was held this past Tuesday, Feb. 5, and the final race is next Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 3:30 p.m. at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford.
