The Bromfield indoor track team qualified 11 competitors for the MIAA Division 5 state meet held Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The girls scored 42 team points, earning them second place, 8 points behind Littleton.
Scoring points for the team were juniors Sam Schoenberg, Tessa McClain, and Liza Toll, and sophomores Claire Stoddard, Dharma Cooper, and Hannah Beckman.The 4×800-meter relay team, which also included eighth-grader Molly Squire and seventh-grader Marissa Flynn, qualified but did not run due to injuries stemming from an earlier competition.

“We entered people in the events we felt that they had the best chance to personally succeed,” said Coach Jon Route. “Everyone had a good day, and the points followed.” Stoddard added, “We had a few people graduate last spring so we weren’t really thinking about winning a team award … I’m really proud of everyone for performing as well as they did.”
Representing the boys team were juniors Will Squire and Will Armstrong and sophomore Jordan Colon. Squire competed in both the mile run, where he finished with a time of 4:58.37, and the high jump, while Colon finished 21st in the 55-meter dash, covering the distance in just 7 seconds. Armstrong provided the highlight of the day by breaking the school record for the 55-meter hurdle event during the preliminary round, in a time of 8.38 seconds. The feat earned him a spot in the finals, where he finished in eighth place after a time of 8.60 seconds. Coach Greg Bourque reflected that the preliminary performance was “beyond impressive” and “the cleanest race he’s run all season.”
The upcoming All-State meet, which features the top three finishers from each division in addition to several at-large bids from the five combined divisions, will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Reggie Lewis Center. Bromfield will be represented by Schoenberg in the high jump and 300-meter run, McClain in the 1,000-meter run, and Stoddard in the long jump.
