The Bromfield boys indoor track team competed in the Division 2 Forty-First Annual Gerry Frew District E Invitational meet Feb. 9 at Fitchburg High School, the third meet of their postseason. The team entered five athletes and earned 6 points. Bromfield will send junior Will Armstrong to the Division 5 state meet, but not every performance satisfied head Coach Greg Bourque.
Armstrong ran a personal best of 8.58 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, earning him a fourth-place finish in the event and qualifying him for the Division 5 state meet Feb. 13. He will be joining sophomore Jordan Colon, who has qualified in the 55-meter dash, and junior Will Squire, who has been seeded in the 1-mile and the high jump.
Armstrong’s 55-meter hurdles times have improved throughout the season. Starting the season with a time of 9.30 seconds, he has consistently shaved about 0.2 seconds from his time per month. Because Armstrong has improved significantly, Bourque said of the upcoming state meet, “He could end up doing well and could possibly break the school record as he is only .08 seconds away.”
Bourque was less satisfied with Armstrong’s and junior Cormac Day’s performances in the shot-put event. He attributed this, in part, to their lack of practice. He said, “We don’t get to spend a lot of time on field events due to the school hallways being our practice area.” It’s not uncommon for kids to not be as consistent in indoor field events for this reason.
Despite competing in the past three meets, Squire had been ill with strep throat during that time, and has been recovering. Bourque said, “Will Squire has been improving every day since his return from his illness.” Both Squire and Bourque have been hoping for a speedy recovery, in time to compete at the Division 5 state meet Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Reggie Lewis Center. Squire said, “Hopefully by states I will be feeling my best and ready to show my fellow competitors who’s boss.”
