The Hudson Hawks defeated the Bromfield Trojans 75-44 last Friday night, Jan. 25, at Bromfield.

The game started slowly for the Trojans. Bromfield scored only 4 points in the first quarter, while Hudson scored 14. But in the second quarter, the Trojans gained enough strength to threaten a comeback. Bromfield junior Nathan Rogers earned his team 4 points with two baskets. Hudson pushed on with a 3-pointer, but Bromfield freshman Nick Russo fired back with one of his own. Hudson met each of the Trojan’s attempts to close the score gap with a basket of its own, managing to stay in the lead. The half ended 31-25, Hudson.
Bromfield’s chances of victory disappeared in the third quarter. Bromfield narrowed Hudson’s lead to a single point, but stopped scoring halfway through the quarter. Hudson, on the other hand, earned seven baskets, including two 3-pointers. By the end of the third quarter, Hudson’s lead was a decisive 51-34.
Although far behind, the Trojans did not give up hope in the last quarter. Senior Charlie Bardenheuer tried to help with a 3-pointer after the Hawks shot ahead another 8 points. Although Bromfield had some more good shots, Hudson was relentless and continued to add to its lead. The game ended with a final basket from the Hawks and a 75-44 loss for the Trojans.

This game and the previous Tuesday’s game put an end to Bromfield’s impressive winning streak. Head Coach Tim Skaggs attributed the losses to key players’ injuries. Senior captain Patrick Flanagan has been out the past two games and he’s an “unsung player as team captain,” Skaggs said. Another senior who was out for the last game is Baylor Ashe, who averages more than 20 points per game.
Nonetheless, Skaggs gives credit to his team for its “willingness to make sacrifices” as team players. He is optimistic for the boys in the rest of the season. The five teams they defeated are coming to play at Bromfield, and the Trojans are only two wins away from making play-offs.
Bromfield’s overall record is now 6-7. The Trojans will play Littleton at home Tuesday, Jan. 29.
