The Bromfield golf team tied Lunenburg, 27-27, at Devens Red Tail Golf Club on Thursday, Sept. 13., defeated Quabbin, 44 to 10, in Gilbertsville, Friday, Sept. 14, and went on to play Oakmont at Westminster, losing 27.5 to 26.5, on Monday, Sept. 17, bringing the team’s record to 1-1-1.
Seniors Justin Patenaude and Lance Jarosz are this year’s team captains.
Lunenburg’s only female player, Emily Nash, the 2018 MIAA state individual girls’ champion, defeated sophomore Freddie Curtis 6-3, scoring 38, two over par. Freshman Adrian Curtis won his match 5.5 to 3.5 and was the low medalist, shooting 37, one over par.
Coach Rod Van Guilder explained that this year, “we’ve got four outstanding players, but the rest I’ve got to bring up to snuff.” Against Lunenburg, “our top two players were a little nervous, and they tried too hard,” he said.
Bromfield soundly defeated Quabbin, a younger team, but fell to Oakmont. Curtis was the low medalist, with one over par 36. Van Guilder characterized Oakmont as having “more depth. We showed … that a team with more depth is better – last year we had depth, this year we’re lacking. [Freddie Curtis, Patenaude, Adrian Curtis, and Jarosz] are very strong players and won their matches last night; however, we still fell short.”
This year, Van Guilder hopes his players will “play the best golf that we can, enjoy it, have a winning season, and compete at the state level.”
Bromfield was scheduled to play its next match against Ayer Shirley Regional High School at Red Tail on Sept. 20 at 3 p.m.
