Between Sept. 1 and Sept. 14 the Harvard Fire Department responded to seven car crashes, three automatic alarms, three ringing smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, and two occurrences of sparking transformers. The department also provided mutual aid to Lawrence after the gas explosions there. Lt. Andrew Perry inspected seven smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, two oil tanks, two residential sprinklers, one dumpster, and one propane tank. He also conducted two commercial building inspections and three hot work inspections, inspections of work sites where welding, soldering, or plasma cutting is being conducted. Chief Rick Sicard attended the Montachusett Area Fire Chiefs meeting Sept. 5, the Fire District 8 monthly meeting Sept. 6, and the Nashoba Valley Regional Dispatch District Operations Board Meeting Sept. 10.
Saturday, Sept. 1
Five firefighters responded to an automatic alarm in a Brown Road barn at 8:54 a.m. The firefighters found a faulty detector and advised the resident to call the alarm company.
Sunday, Sept. 2: Lt. Perry went to check a trouble alarm at the old library at 11:18 a.m. He reset the alarm and it resumed normal function.
Monday, Sept. 3
At 8:04 a.m. the department assisted with an accident on Route 2 westbound at Jackson Road. They found a single car on the far side of the guard rail. The six firefighters provided scene safety; the Harvard ambulance took two passengers to the hospital. The car was towed. At 2:21 p.m. eight firefighters and one recruit responded to a rollover on Old Littleton Road. When they arrived they found the vehicle on its side and the occupant out of the vehicle. The ambulance took the occupant to the hospital. The firefighters cleaned up an oil spill and waited until the car was towed. Lt. Justin Warren trained four recruits on ladders and how to connect a hose to a hydrant from 7 to 8:19 p.m. The department was called to the second rollover of the day at 8:19 p.m. on Old Shirley Road. When the eight firefighters arrived they found a car on its roof, behind a stone wall, and the driver already out of the car. The Harvard ambulance took the driver to the hospital. The firefighters cleaned up fluids and debris and waited for the tow company.
Tuesday, Sept. 4
At 6:22 p.m. the department was dispatched to a motorcycle accident on Still River Road at Prospect Hill Road. Lt. Tony Shaw was first on scene. He evaluated the accident, determined he could handle it alone, and canceled the response from the rest of the department.
Wednesday, Sept. 5
At the monthly department training, 16 firefighters, Chief Sicard, and two recruits practiced technical rescues on the roof of the Fire Station.
Thursday, Sept. 6
A Lancaster County Road resident called at 3:36 p.m. about a problem detector. Lt. Perry assisted the resident. At 6:21 p.m. Chief Sicard and five firefighters went to another rollover, this one on Route 2 westbound, west of Ayer Road. The ambulance took one person to the hospital. The firefighters provided scene safety, cleaned up fluids, and waited until the car was towed.
Saturday, Sept. 8
An automatic alarm called four firefighters to a Stow Road home at 1:19 p.m. The firefighters found no signs of smoke or fire. They did find a detector that was signaling an error. They cleaned the detector and the system returned to normal operation.
Sunday, Sept. 9
Two firefighters assisted the District 8 dive team with their training on Bare Hill Pond from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 10
t 5:31 p.m. the department received a report of a sparking transformer. Lt. Bill Barton went to the Stow Road address. There were no downed wires. National Grid was notified.
Tuesday, Sept. 11
At 4:28 p.m. Lt. Perry helped a Madigan Lane resident reset smoke detectors that had been set off by cooking. At 9:49 p.m. seven firefighters and one recruit responded to the station for a car crash on Route 2 eastbound before Taylor Street. The crew was canceled en route because the Littleton Fire Department was able to handle the call.
Wednesday, Sept. 12
At 3:05 a.m. six firefighters responded to a report of arcing wires on Littleton Road. They found a tree, wires, and a transformer down in a driveway, and a small brush fire. They extinguished the brush fire and waited for National Grid to arrive. They returned to the station at 5 a.m. At 5:14 p.m. six firefighters and one recruit responded to a car crash on Slough Road. The driver refused medical assistance. The firefighters waited until the car was towed. The firefighters who serve as vehicle engineers met from 7 to 9 p.m. The fire officers met from 7 to 9:15 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 13
Five Harvard firefighters provided mutual aid to the city of Lawrence after the gas main explosions. The firefighters were out of town from 6 p.m. until 4 a.m. See story above. Nine firefighters, Chief Sicard, and two recruits stayed at the station from 6 to 10 p.m. while the other firefighters were out of town.
Friday, Sept. 14
Lt. Perry assisted an Ann Lees Road resident with a problem smoke detector at 11: 35 a.m.
Fire Department Factoid
From Sept. 13 through Sept. 20, the four engines, the tower, and the forestry truck received preventative maintenance from the town mechanic at the DPW garage.
