Let’s go to the movies
On Monday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. in Volunteers Hall, see a feature-length film based on a true event. The film tells the story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego and sail into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.
Computer classes in September
- 10 Strategies for computer happiness, Friday, Sept. 14; learn simple techniques for minimizing frustration.
- Introduction to the Cloud, Friday, Sept. 28; learn how to utilize cloud storage.
Acrylic art class
The COA will offer an art class using acrylics, with instruction on how to paint on glass, Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. The class will be led by art student Kelsey Fort.
Book Club for September
Come to Hildreth House Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. to discuss “Life Is So Good.” The book is the autobiography of 103-year-old George Dawson, a slave’s grandson who learned to read at age 98. It offers insights into the history of America, from segregation and civil rights to the wars, presidents, and defining moments of the 20th century. Find the book at the Harvard Public Library or purchase it.
Ham & bean supper
For the COA’s final outdoor event of the summer, the Knights of Columbus will host a ham and bean supper at Hildreth House at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Please sign up by Sept. 5.
Senior Day at the Farmers Market
Saturday, Sept. 29, is Senior Day at the Harvard Farmers Market in front of Hildreth Elementary School. SNAP benefits may be used to purchase fresh produce at some vendors. Entertainment will be by Debbie Thompson’s band, “Side Effects.” The COA van will be available for transportation; call 48 hours in advance to sign up for it.
Hildreth House Phase 2 update
The RFQ (Request of Qualifications) for a Phase 2 architect is ready to go. The architect should start work in the fall, and a new Phase 2 schematic plan should be ready by early next year.
The Phase 2 expansion project is on the Town’s capital plan for FY2021, so it will be on the Town Warrant at the Annual Town Meeting in May 2020.
The COA board and building committee members will appoint a representative to the building committee at its September meeting.
