Apple season is ramping up, and pick-your-own has either started or will start soon at most local orchards. Varieties change frequently, so check Facebook pages and websites of the various orchards for what’s being picked.
Carlson Orchards, 115 Oak Hill Road
Pick-your-own Ginger Gold apples and peaches; check Facebook for pick-your-own blueberries and raspberries. Peaches, nectarines, plums, and early apples available in the store. Brookdale Fruit Farm’s corn, tomatoes (regular and organic cherry), zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, peppers, and green string beans available in the store.
Doe Orchards, 327 Ayer Road
Pick-your-own peaches and Honeycrisp and Gala apples. Gravenstein and Ginger Gold apples as well as peaches at the stand, along with Doe’s honey. Note that the stand has moved up the hill as it does each year when blueberry picking ends.
Old Frog Pond Farm, 38 Eldridge Road
Certified organic raspberries (pick-your-own and at the stand), potatoes, heirloom and cherry tomatoes, garlic, basil, and eggs.
Westward Orchards, 178 Massachusetts Avenue
Strawberries, yellow and white peaches, nectarines, plums, Jersey Mac and Ginger Gold apples, Red Bartlett pears. Corn, tomatoes (regular, heirloom, and cherry), lettuce, broccoli, peppers (bell and hot), eggplant, carrots, kale, Swiss chard, cucumbers, bok choy, beans, beets, summer squash, zucchini, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, sweet potatoes, and a variety of herbs. Westward is targeting the weekend of Sept. 8 for pick-your-own apples.
Willard Farm, 218 Still River Road
White, yellow, and bicolor corn, red and yellow tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, zucchini, and summer squash. Red Norland, Green Mountain, and Yukon Gold potatoes. Ornamental edible pepper plants.
