The Bromfield girls varsity track team placed first for the fourth year in a row at the MIAA Western/Central Division 2 Championships at Fitchburg State University Saturday, May 26. The team posted a total of 63.50 points.
Senior Chloe Alfieri took first place in both the 100-meter and the 200-meter events with times of 12.22 seconds and 24.29 seconds, respectively, both school records. Sophomore Sam Schoenberg broke the school record in the high jump with a height of 5 feet 6 inches. Freshman Claire Stoddard broke a school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.50 minutes.
“It was a very hard-fought meet,” head Coach Jonathan Route said in an interview this week. “So many great performances. The seniors really wanted that fourth title, and the underclassmen knew it and stepped up to help make it happen. I’m proud of every one of them for their determination and sportsmanship.”
Coach Ellis Toll described the moments leading up to the announcement of the scores in a post-event email: “There was a lot of nervous energy around the team tent between the end of the meet and the time the final scores were read. We had been going back and forth all day with South Hadley, a team that has given us a pretty good run for our money the last couple years. The whole team huddled together and made sure everyone was quiet so that it would be easier to hear the scores, which they read from last place to first. Once they announced that South Hadley came in second, I just about went deaf because the whole team started screaming at the top of their lungs. … I don’t think they stopped until we got off the bus at Bromfield.”
The team will compete in the MIAA All-State Championship Saturday, June 2, at Fitchburg State University.
