Annual Town Meeting and Town Election
The 2018 Annual Town Meeting will be held Saturday, May 5, in the Bromfield Gymnasium beginning at 9 a.m. Go to https://bit.ly/2GS04PL to view the Finance Committee booklet, which includes the Town Meeting warrant and the proposed charter. This booklet will be mailed to all households in town by April 21. The annual Town Election will be held Tuesday, May 8, in the Bromfield Cafeteria from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Harvard Woman’s Club scholarships
The Harvard Woman’s Club is accepting applications for its annual scholarship awards. This year’s scholarships will be awarded in June to graduates of the Bromfield School and/or to Harvard residents graduating from other public schools.
Applications and additional information are available at www.harvardwomansclub.wordpress.com/scholarship. Applications must be received no later than April 30.
New driver’s license requirements
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has announced that documentation of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence is now required to obtain or renew any driver’s license or learner’s permit. See the RMV website www.mass.gov/orgs/massachusetts-registry-of-motor-vehicles for more details.
Voter registration deadlines
The deadline to register to vote at this year’s Annual Town Meeting May 5 and Town Election May 8 is Friday, April 13. The town clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. that day. Residents may also register to vote online at www.registertovoteMA.com.
New Medicare cards to be issued
Beginning this month, Medicare beneficiaries will receive new Medicare cards with new numbers. In order to prevent identity theft, Social Security numbers will no longer be used on Medicare cards. Instead, each beneficiary will receive a new, unique Medicare number. Medicare will mail the new cards over a one-year period between April 2018 and April 2019.
Residents do not need to do anything to receive a new Medicare card except to make sure the Social Security Administration has a correct mailing address. To change or update your address, go to www.ssa.gov or call 800-772-1213.
Medicare will not contact anyone to ask for personal information in order to send a new card. Residents should not share personal information with anyone offering to supply a new Medicare card or is calling to confirm a Medicare or Social Security number. If you have questions, concerns, or believe you have been a victim of a scam, call 800-892-0890. Get to know the proposed charter
The Charter Commission has scheduled “Get to Know the Harvard Charter” coffees upstairs at the General Store:
- Thursday, April 5, 1-2:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, April 11, 9-10:30 a.m.
- Monday, April 16, 9-10:30 a.m.
- Friday, April 20, 5:30-7 p.m.
- Monday, April 23, 1-2:30 p.m.
If the second floor of the General Store is inaccessible to you, a commissioner will meet with you downstairs. Commissioners will also be visiting various town organizations to speak about the charter. Email chartercommission@harvard.ma.us for information and scheduling.

The public hearing notes provide historical perspective of issues that citizens brought to the commission’s attention and were addressed over the course of developing the charter.
Clothing drive to benefit Camp Sunshine and Epilepsy Foundation
A clothing drive to benefit Camp Sunshine and the Epilepsy Foundation will be held Saturdays April 7 and 14, at the Transfer Station from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For every pound of clothing collected, the Epilepsy Foundation will donate $0.20 to Camp Sunshine. All clothing items as well as shoes, linens, and backpacks, will be accepted. Residents may also drop off items at the Bromfield School, the library, St. Theresa’s Church, and at the Council on Aging
