The Bromfield–North Middlesex team hosted the second meet of the year, racing grand slalom, on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Nashoba Valley Ski Area. The boys snatched their second victory of the season while the girls finished last, but both teams improved individually.
North Middlesex sophomore Callum Hammill won the race with a first run that was the fastest of the day at 21.39 seconds. Bromfield junior Jack Donaldson finished second, with the fastest second run on a deteriorated course. North Middlesex senior Haydn Hammill finished fourth, while the rest of the scoring skiers crossed the line in the next three seconds, all placing in the top 15. Coach David Bobruff said they’ll need this type of consistency from the top five skiers to continue to win races, “especially as we enter the slalom part of our season.”
With only four of the five girls varsity skiers completing the race, the team finished last, in eighth place. However, there was improvement among the skiers who did finish. Bromfield eighth-grader Norah Pride finished seventh with a time of 43.96 seconds while the other three girls finished in the top 40, with improved times. Bromfield junior Sage McFarland finished in the top 10 on her first run, but she was disqualified on her second run when her arm was caught on the inside of a panel gate as she skied more aggressively. Coach Bobruff said, “These results emphasize the need for consistency, as the team result suffered tremendously from having only four scores.” However, he continued, the individual results “show significant promise for the team in the coming weeks.”
After two meets, the boys currently reign as first in the league with a 14–0–0 record while the girls rank seventh, with a 2–12–0 record. Each meet is against seven other teams; the record shows how many of those teams Bromfield has beaten, lost to and tied. The team’s third meet is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 30.
