State-certified emergency medical technicians and Bromfield seniors Julia Foley and Sophie Beckman developed a Junior EMT program as part of a senior project. Along with adult Harvard Ambulance Service members, the pair conducted courses in July and November for more than 30 students in grades 7 to 9. Foley and Beckman included topics in classroom and hands-on training, such as hands-only CPR/AED, patient assessment, vital signs, splinting, extrication, common emergencies, and medications.
The courses received very positive student feedback and provided participants with experience to be prepared to assist should they encounter an emergency, and to consider future career opportunities in a medical field.
Foley and Beckman remarked that this was a tremendous experience for them, as it taught them to appreciate their own teachers, to understand EMT skills from a different perspective, and to brush up on some skills they don’t have much opportunity to use.
