Amy (Riggio) McDougall, 49, of Shirley, formerly of Essex, Connecticut, died at her home Nov. 26, 2017.
Amy served as town clerk of Shirley for 11 years before she was appointed Harvard’s town clerk in December 2016, the first to be appointed to a position that had remained elected since Harvard’s founding. A serious injury in January, however, ultimately forced her to take unpaid medical leave in May, from which she was unable to return.
At the time of her hiring, Harvard Town Administrator Tim Bragan was quoted by the Press as saying the town was lucky to have found someone as experienced as Amy to replace the town’s retiring clerk of 22 years. “She was the right person at the right time,” he said. “She got along with everyone.” A close friend recalled that Amy always ended her emails with the mantra, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Amy was a certified Massachusetts municipal clerk and a member of the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association. She graduated with honors from the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, and the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut.
Amy is survived by her husband, Brian McDougall; her daughter, Lila; her parents, Tom and Louise Riggio; her brother, TJ, and his wife, Sally; and three nieces and one nephew.
Private graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Essex, Connecticut. In Amy’s memory, the family would like you to celebrate her life and give those dear to you a hug and tell them how much you love them.
