A mindful remembrance

November 23, 2017

On Nov. 12, at the end of the Sunday service, the bell from the belfry of the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church tolled in honor of the 48 people who lost their lives [in the United States] to anti-transgender violence and discrimination this [between 2016 and year-to-date 2017 according to Human Rights Campaign (HRC.org)]. Before the ringing, during the service, the last words of the Rev. Jill Cowie’s sermon were “Let us begin to find balance, let us manifest the great healing, and let us be present to greet the new dawn.” I thank Rev. Cowie for this aural symbol to raise awareness and, as we near the anniversary of Harvard’s “rock incident,” a mindful remembrance that we are a community where love and acceptance prevail.
