And indeed they did come, and they did support our Harvard Lions Club charities by attending our Volksfest and Bed Race event.
Early in the morning of Sept. 16, a transformation began to occur in the driveway to the Bromfield School. More than 100 bales of hay began to appear along the sides of the driveway, pop-up tents were erected, banners were raised, and numerous checkered flags with adjacent caution tape and an LED timing clock began to transform the environment into a visible race track.
By 2 p.m. the transformation of the Bromfield driveway would soon become the setting for the second annual Harvard Lions Bed Race with 10 bed race teams and 50 individual racers.
The Lions Bed Race provided a setting where our community could come together to enjoy something as “silly” as a bed race and provide a spirit of fun, laughter, and lighthearted competition. There were bed races between teachers, students, senior citizens, neighbors, organizations, clubs—even moms and dads racing against their kids.
As chairman of the Harvard Lions Bed Race, I want to personally extend a thank-you to my fellow Lions for their help on this program, the community at large for its outpouring of spectator support, and most certainly all the bed race teams that truly made the event the success that it was. Please join us again next year.
Team Procrastinators captured first place with a time of 44.11, Team Flamingos captured second place with a time of 46:55, and Team Bare Hill Rowing Association Wakemakers took third place with a time of 48:52. The trophy for best overall theme and costume went to Hildreth’s Heroes. The Lions Club Bed Race first-place trophy awarded to Team Procrastinators will be on display at the General Store—look for it.
