Literacy organization wants volunteer tutors
Literacy Volunteers of the Montachusett Area will hold information sessions for prospective volunteers 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, and Wednesday, Oct. 18. The organization provides free, confidential, and individualized tutoring to adults in basic literacy and English for speakers of other languages. To become a tutor, interested persons are asked to attend 18 hours of training and commit to tutoring an adult for at least 2 hours per week for 9 to 12 months. Ambulance Service holds classes for EMTs
The Harvard Ambulance Service will hold classes for adult EMTs starting Sunday, Oct. 1. Classes will be Sundays noon to 4 p.m. and Thursdays 6 to 10 p.m. The cost for Harvard residents is $500; cost for nonresidents seeking their EMT certification is $1,450. Join the Glean Team!
Make a difference in just 90 minutes a month. The Glean Team is a volunteer group that picks up food donated by Roche Bros. in Acton and delivers it to a food pantry or shelter in the Devens and Clinton areas. Pickups are done weekday mornings; it takes 60 to 90 minutes to pick up and deliver to one of the locations. Our only requirements are a strong back and a car with good cargo area (hatchback or SUV). Each year Harvard’s Cultural Council funds a wide variety of activities, including community gatherings, plays, festivals, arts and science education, and other projects focusing on local history, diversity, restoration, and preservation. Canoe/kayak guide available
Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a beginner looking for a safe family adventure, the new 120-page, pocket-sized Nashua River Canoe and Kayak Guide will be a valuable tool. The guide is produced by the Nashua River Watershed Association and provides information on the Nashua River and its major tributaries. In full color, it contains information on launch locations, river hazards, what to expect on each segment of the rivers, and 16 river maps. The guide is available for purchase ($16) at the NRWA Resource Center at 592 Main Street in Groton or online at www.NashuaRiverWatershed.org, where you can also learn more about the NRWA’s work to provide water and land protection and environmental education programs to 32 communities.

Tsongas to host U.S. service academy and military career forum
Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will host her district’s annual U.S. Service Academy and Military Career Forum Thursday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. at Lowell High School, 50 Father Morissette Boulevard in Lowell. The event will explain opportunities to attend the United States service academies, participate in local university ROTC programs, and serve in the armed forces. Students and their families may interact with representatives of each of these organizations and explore the benefits military service can provide. Volunteer opportunities at Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts needs construction volunteers to help with projects in Littleton and Fitchburg. No experience is needed; tools and training will be provided. Volunteers are also needed at Habitat’s re-store, its discount home improvement store in Leominster. Another way to help Habitat is to staff an information table at one of the organization’s upcoming events. There is still booth space available at the October 7 Flea Market. Be part of one of Harvard’s signature events and sell some of those items that are just taking up space in your attic or basement. MassDOT opens Acton registry services
The MassDOT Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and AAA Northeast have announced that RMV license and registration services are now offered to AAA members at the AAA branch in Acton at 342 Great Road (Route 2A).
