Girls soccer loses opener to North Middlesex

September 14, 2017

The Bromfield girls varsity soccer team lost to the North Middlesex Patriots in the first game of the season Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Harvard Park. The final score was 7–5.

Bromfield had the lead for the first 20 minutes of the game, scoring its first goal within the first five minutes. Freshman Olivia Kehoe passed the ball to freshman Bella Kehoe across the goal, and Sam Schoenberg made the shot off Bella Kehoe’s rebound. Olivia Kehoe had the next two goals of the game, followed by sophomore defender Caroline Mara, who scored in the top corner of the net. Bromfield Coach Kathyrn Hayward later observed, “We were connecting passes, possessing the ball, and playing as a team … We came out on fire, ready to go.”

The Patriots fired back in the last third of the half, scoring five of their seven goals before the whistle sounded at halftime. In the last several minutes, Bromfield defenders found themselves struggling to clear the ball, and Patriot players repeatedly intercepted passes. Bromfield persevered and scored its final goal near the end of the half, when senior Sarah Moore took a corner kick and put the ball into the net.

The Patriots continued to dominate the second half of the game, while the Trojans stayed back on defense. Bromfield also switched its goalie from eighth-grader Annabel Ashe to senior Jessy Andrews. North Middlesex took two more goals, but determined Trojan players kept taking shots on goal throughout the half.

Summing up the match last week, Coach Hayward said, “We had great moments and opportunities to score … [we] just could not capitalize in the second half. We will get back to work tomorrow at practice … I have all the confidence in the world in my girls. We will take this as a learning opportunity and move forward together as a team.”

The girls bounced back on Monday, Sept. 11, with a 10–2 win against Hudson.
