The Bromfield Trojans beat the Tyngsborough Tigers 3–1 away on Friday, Sept. 8, in their first game of the season.
To open the game, Bromfield had several opportunities to score with four corners. The Tigers fought back, and Bromfield did not regain the ball until senior captain Lauren Hadorn dribbled the ball back down the field, setting sophomore Ella Corbett up to score with an assist from senior captain Greer Jarvis, nine minutes into the first half.
Bromfield made its second goal four minutes after that. This time, Bromfield had to overcome a more aggressive Tyngsborough team, which managed a few shots on goal and two corners. Bromfield eventually recovered the ball, and Hadorn cleanly scored.
The last 13 minutes of the first half passed with neither side gaining the advantage in a middle-of-the-field struggle.
Although Bromfield solidly controlled the first half, Tyngsborough came out in the second half charged and ready to play. For the first 15 minutes, Tyngsborough made multiple attempts on goal, which junior goalie Chloe Cushing blocked. Coach Susan Silver ultimately called a timeout to talk to the team, which ended the meeting with a firm cheer of “Defense!”
Bromfield emerged revitalized, but Tyngsborough managed to score off a corner. However, after a bit of a scuffle in the middle of the field, freshman Claire Stoddart sprinted down the field with the ball, giving Bromfield the lead necessary to allow Hadorn to score again with two minutes on the clock. Bromfield ended the game trying for one last goal.
Coach Silver, after the game, explained that after the loss of players who graduated from the team last year, she was concerned about her defensive line but felt better after the game, adding, “I do think we have a chance to make the districts, but we do have to work really hard.”
Bromfield will play Leominster, away, Friday, Sept. 15, and St. Bernard’s Central Catholic School, away, Monday, Sept. 18.
