Community Harvest Project seeks volunteer leaders
Community Harvest Project (CHP) will host a training session for volunteer team leaders at its orchard at 115 Prospect Hill Road Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Leaders are needed to work with groups that will visit the farm in September and October. Team leaders work with CHP staff and interns to help coordinate and direct the work of small groups of volunteers in picking, sorting, and packaging apples for donation to hunger relief organizations throughout central and eastern Massachusetts.
Apples will be harvested from September 1 through October 15 from 9 a.m. to noon several days a week. Volunteer leaders may help out one day a week or more. This is an opportunity for retirees, at-home parents, or anyone looking to help our community. For anyone interested, CHP asks that you visit the North Grafton farm one time in August to see team leaders in action and come to the training in Harvard August 29. Street closures
DPW Director Tim Kilhart has announced that DPW will be replacing two culverts on Littleton Road between Fairbank Street and Whitney Road. Littleton Road will be closed during the day for the construction but will be open at the end of each day. The culverts are being replaced in preparation for the repaving of Littleton Road.
Fitchburg Art Museum seeks tour guides
Interviews are now being scheduled for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer tour guide (docent) at the Fitchburg Art Museum. Participants do not need to have a background in art but should have an interest and a desire to learn and share with others.
A new docent training program begins Thursday, Sept. 14, with training by museum staff and outside experts on art history, the museum’s collections, special exhibitions, and tour techniques. Upon completion of the course, docents are required to make a two-year commitment to museum service. Symphony Pro Musica to hold auditions
Symphony Pro Musica (SPM) invites musicians to audition for its upcoming 35th anniversary season. Music director Mark Churchill will hold auditions in Hudson on Monday, Sept. 11, and by appointment later in September. Players of all orchestra instruments are encouraged to audition; in particular, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, and all strings are needed. The 2017-2018 season includes appearances by outstanding soloists and a variety of symphonic pieces, plus a fully staged production of “The Nutcracker” with artists from the Boston Ballet.
Cultural Collaborative announces events
To celebrate the old library’s new lease on life in the heart of Harvard, the Harvard Cultural Collaborative (HCC) will host four special events in the coming weeks:
- Service Provider Open House
Monday, Aug. 28, 6 to 8 p.m.
Anyone interested in renting space to teach a class or convene a club is welcome to drop by the building. There will be informal tours of the various spaces, and an HCC board member will answer questions. - Good Neighbor Open House
Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. to noon
HCC invites residents who live on and around the Common and the old library to drop by to see the space, learn about policies and procedures, and ask any questions. - Grand Opening!
Friday, Sept. 15, 6 to 8 p.m.
HCC invites all to drop in to see the newly painted, welcoming space. There will be light refreshments, perhaps libations, and music to share with the community. - Arts Sampler

HCC will open its doors to all ages as talented community members offer previews of courses they will be offering and community groups share information about gatherings they will hold.
Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers
Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts needs construction volunteers to help at its newest home build in Fitchburg. No experience is needed; tools and training will be provided. Candlepin bowling league starts
The Merchants, a mixed candlepin bowling league at Harvard Lanes on Ayer Road, is looking for new members. Men and women of any skill level may join as individuals or as a team of three bowlers. The league starts on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., and continues through the fall and winter months. This is a cash prize league with an end-of-season awards banquet.
