James J. (Jim) Hammond Jr., D.M.D., 67, a lifelong Fitchburg resident, died Friday, Aug. 25, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, after an illness. Prior to his retirement, Jim was a dentist in Harvard for 33 years and is remembered for his compassionate care and thoughtful treatment of his patients.
He leaves his longtime companion, Annie Wiley of Fitchburg; one brother, Jeffrey P. Hammond, and his wife, Michelle, of Fitchburg; one sister, Judith P. Moodie, and her husband, Robert, of Littleton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin brother, John F. Hammond, in 2013.
James was a graduate of Boston College and Tufts University Dental School. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Parish in Fitchburg. Jim maintained a lifelong passion for golf, music, Boston sports, and the enjoyment of friends and family.
He was born in Fitchburg on Feb. 20, 1950, a son of the late James J. Hammond Sr. and Elizabeth A. (Desmond) Hammond.
James’ funeral was planned for Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, from the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Parish at St. Camillus Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial was to follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Fitchburg.
