For the fourth year in a row, the Minuteman Road Club has generously donated proceeds from the Harvard Firefighters eighth annual Ken Harrod Memorial Bike Race, held in town June 3, to the Harvard Firefighters Association. Minuteman Road Club race director Dave Mingori presented firefighters Robert Curran and Andrew Perry with a check for $5,000 at the Harvard fire station Aug. 23. During the event, nearly 400 registered riders participated in eight USA Cycling-sanctioned races on a 10-mile course through Harvard’s eastern roads and hills, following the old Veryfine Bike Race route. A portion of each rider’s entry fee was the source of the donation.
Funds raised from the ride and the race help support a number of different causes:
- The Harvard Firefighters scholarship fund
- 2016 purchase and installation of a hoop house to shelter the Harvard Fire Department rescue boat behind Center Station
- The Harvard Firefighters equipment fund (such as the purchase of thermal cameras and gear lockers for $4,000)
- The Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) program
- The Harvard Firefighters benevolent fund
- The Harvard Firefighters family crisis fund
- Sponsorship of Harvard youth sports
