Longtime resident, medical technician; active in church and community

Emily May Guyett, age 91, of Harvard, passed away on June 20, 2017, at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Her love, kindness, grace, and quiet fortitude comforted and inspired all who knew her.
Born in New York City on June 10, 1926, to George Earl and Olive May, Emily spent her childhood in Larchmont, New York, and Maplewood, New Jersey. She graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood in 1944, and she attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia, in 1946. Afterward she completed a medical laboratory technician training certificate program.
Emily worked as a laboratory technician at Clara Maass Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, during the 1950s, as well as at Clinton Hospital in Clinton in the 1970s and the Lahey Clinic in Burlington in the 1980s.
Emily married Clayton Lawrence Guyett, of Massena, New York, on May 7, 1955. They lived in Orange and Chatham, New Jersey, until 1965, then Simsbury, Connecticut, for three years prior to settling in Harvard in 1969.
Emily was an active member of the Congregational Church of Harvard, where she sang in the choir for many years and volunteered for the church floral committee, Loaves & Fishes, and the Harvard Apple Festival, making pies and soups to support her church community. She was an avid lover of animals, nature, and birds, and she enjoyed several cherished dogs and cats. In 1997, Emily returned to school at Worcester State College to take art classes, where she met friends and expanded her skills as an accomplished painter.
Emily is survived by her daughter, Amanda Amory, and her husband, Francis “Tuck” Amory of Worcester, and Tuck’s two children, Matthew Amory of Brookline and Sarah Welch of Newton, and their families; and her daughter, Corinne Norris, and her husband, Greg Norris, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and their sons, Mitchell and Nicholas, who were a source of tremendous joy in her life. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Roff of Westfield, New Jersey; her brother, Roger May, and his wife, Judy, of Morristown, New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton Guyett, in 2009, and her brother, Donald May, in 2014, and his wife, Betty, in 2011.
A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church of Harvard, 5 Still River Road, Harvard, on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Emily requested that any donations in her memory be made to the Friends of the Harvard Council on Aging, P.O. Box 474, Harvard, MA 01451, which provided wonderful support during her last years.
