The Bromfield girls track and field team placed third at the Mid-Wach League Division D championships with a score of 103 points. Littleton claimed first place with 109 points, and Lunenburg was the runner-up with 105 points. The meet took place Wednesday, May 17, and Thursday, May 18, at Lunenburg High School.
Junior Chloe Alfieri landed three impressive first-place finishes, winning the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter, and the long jump. Freshman Sam Schoenberg was the only other Trojan to finish first in an individual event. Schoenberg’s leap of 5 feet 2 inches was enough to garner first place in the high jump. Eighth-grader Claire Stoddard was close to clocking a first-place finish in an incredibly competitive 400-meter, placing second in the event, which saw the top three runners within fractions of a second of one another.
Two out of Bromfield’s three relays clocked first-place times. Senior Sarah Doben, junior Anya Bégué, senior Natalie O’Leary, and freshman Liza Toll collaborated for a first-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay, winning the event by almost two seconds. Bégué and Toll also scored in their individual events. Bégué took first in the 100-meter high hurdles, and Toll placed third in the 100-meter dash. In the 4×400-meter relay, Doben, eighth-grader Claire Stoddard, senior Maddie Steele, and senior Hannah LoChiatto ran the event in 4:28.86, putting them a solid three seconds in front of the second-place team.
Meanwhile, distance runner Tessa McClain scored in both of her individual events, placing third in the 1-mile and fourth in the 800-meter. LoChiatto also scored in the 800-meter, finishing fifth behind McClain. In the 2-mile, senior Eva Xue ran a 14:49.82, which was good enough for fifth place. Xue, along with eighth-grader Hannah Beckman, junior Sophie Beckman, and eighth-grader Helena Justicz, ran in the 4×800-meter relay as well and finished third overall.
Sophomores Izzi Barton and Sage McFarland led Bromfield’s efforts in the throwing events. Barton placed fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put while McFarland placed fifth in the discus. In the pole vault, junior Arielle Sclar soared 10 feet to capture first place while sophomore Leila Grant lept 7 feet 6 inches to place fourth.
The Trojans faced off against Oakmont on Tuesday, May 23, in a nonleague meet. After Oakmont, the next stop for the team is the Central-Western Division 2 meet, which will take place at Westfield State University on Saturday, May 27. The top four finishers in each event will move on to the state championship meet.
