The Bromfield Trojans baseball team lost, 4–3, to St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School Saints in an away game on Sunday afternoon, May 7.
“Today was a very good matchup between two pretty good teams,” said Bromfield Coach Lonnie Quirion after the game.
At the end of the first inning, the score was tied, but in the second inning St. Bernard’s earned one run and squeaked into the lead. Before they were able to get too far ahead, Bromfield completed three outs and ended the inning.
In the top of the third, Bromfield fought back. After the first out, senior Scott Jarosz got a hit and made it to first base. Jarosz later stole second base, setting himself up for a run. When senior Ian Hanson hit a double, Jarosz scored to tie the game at 3–3.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the seventh inning. Tensions ran high for all at this point in the game. If St. Bernard’s got a run, they would win the game. But if they didn’t, the game would go into extra innings, and Bromfield would have another chance to break the tie.
It was all over when a St. Bernard’s player homered for the final score of 4–3.
Coach Quirion attributed the loss to a lack of hitting, but he said the team played well defensively. Junior Rory VanDorpe was notable as pitcher, getting three strikeouts.
Bromfield had six hits in the game and St. Bernard’s had nine. Bromfield had one error, while St. Bernard’s was error-free.
The loss left Bromfield varsity baseball with an overall record of 5–3. Coach Quirion planned to bounce back easily from this game: “We’ve hit pretty well as a team for the most part this season, so I expect our bats will respond tomorrow against Lunenburg.”
Quirion noted that the coming week would be a big one for the team. Bromfield played Monday, May 8, against Lunenburg High School in Lunenburg, and won 5–4. On Tuesday, May 9, the Trojans beat Littleton High School in Littleton, 2–1. Then on Wednesday, May 10, the team was scheduled to play Littleton again, this time at home. All three games were against teams in the same Midland Wachusett league as Bromfield and will determine whether the Trojans have a shot at a regional title.
