The Trojans once again won three of their matches last week, winning 5–0 against North Middlesex Monday, May 15, 4–1 against Notre Dame Tuesday; and 5–0 against Tyngsborough Thursday.
The home match against Notre Dame, for the second time this season, was particularly challenging. On Tuesday, Notre Dame came with its full lineup whereas earlier in the season, most girls were out sick. They gambled and put an inexperienced player in third singles, letting junior Sarah Moore win 6–0, 6–0. According to Coach Chris Holmes in a postgame interview, Notre Dame’s plan was to win first and second singles and first doubles. However, their second singles player retired in the second set against eighth-grader Leimalia Tratnyek due to shin splints. Regardless, Tratnyek had already been in control of the match, winning the first set 6–2. Senior and captain Lisa Jorgensen played comfortably against a first singles player she had played against many times in the past three years; both of them had won around the same number of matches against each other, but this time, Jorgensen got ahead and won 6–2, 6–3. Senior and co-captain Ariel Jones-Mollod and sophomore Alex O’Neil played first doubles against a pair who had the upper hand in terms of experience, which was most likely the reason for the loss. They won the first set 4–6, lost 6–3 in the second set and lost a 10-point super tiebreaker ending 10–6 in the third set.
The match against Tyngsborough on Thursday, May 18, was a different scene from the match at the beginning of the year, a time when the Tyngsborough team lacked experience. Tyngsborough was now second in the league, behind the Trojans, having lost only one match (which so happened to be the earlier one against Bromfield), so beating them again was essential if Bromfield was to remain on top. Fortunately, the Bromfield players won all five matches easily. Jones-Mollod and O’Neil won their first doubles match quickly, 6–0, 6–0, and Jorgensen beat the first singles player, who suffered her first loss in the league.
With three matches left, the Trojans have pretty much secured their position for district playoffs. Although the Wednesday match against Division 1 powerhouse Wachusett is looking to be a challenge, Coach Holmes says it will be a good way to evaluate where the Trojans stand in terms of district competition.
