The girls tennis team crushed its opponents last week with four 5–0 victories, the exception being the 4–1 match against Gardner, bringing the Trojans’ winning streak to eight matches in a row, propelling them to the top of their division.
On Monday, May 8, the Trojans managed to defeat Groton-Dunstable 5–0, which was a big turnaround from last year when Groton-Dunstable beat the Trojans twice. All the girls were on their top game, and all the starting players were present.
The Tuesday match against undefeated Gardner proved to be more difficult. Gardner had not lost any of its matches, posting an unbroken series of 5–0 victories, until its match with Bromfield. The 4–1 win, with the only loss coming from an extremely competitive second singles, resulted from very long matches. Eighth-grader Leimalia Tratnyek lost the first set 6–4, but managed to win the second set 6–4. However, the third set went to Gardner as the long set ended 10–8. In second doubles, sophomore Alex O’Neil and freshman Olivia Noyes won the first set easily. But the next two sets were closer and it was harder to get control over the ball. Both went into tiebreakers, which the girls won 5–7 and 9–7, respectively. Senior and captain Lisa Jorgensen was strong and consistent, missing very few balls against Gardner’s best player, winning easily in straight sets, 6–4, 6–0.
Neither the two back-to-back home matches against Clinton on Thursday, May 11, nor the home match against Littleton the following day posed much of a challenge. Freshman Sara Picariello was able to win her first varsity match in second doubles during the second match against Clinton. Because of the need to fit both matches into one day, the two matches were played in “8-game point pro sets,” meaning that instead of winning by playing two or three sets, players had to be the first one to win eight games instead of six, and by a margin of two games.
Bromfield also won its match Monday, May 15, against North Middlesex by a score of 5–0. The girls remain first in their Mid Wach division, with the district playoffs looking within reach.
