The Bromfield Acton-Boxborough varsity rowers went to Wayland for the Wayland-Weston Invitational Regatta on Lake Cochituate Sunday, which was a day of racing 4s. Both squads entered five boats with two races each: a qualifying race to determine the top four, and then either a grand final for the top two finishers in each heat or a petite final (for first and second varsity boats) to determine places five through eight. A total of nine teams from both private and public schools competed.

“The varsity boys fared well this weekend, against some of the top fours teams in the country,” said boys head Coach Brian DeDominici. “I was very happy with the results and the progress the team is showing. The boys’ ability to split up our normal eights into fours and row as well as we did speaks to their developing skills.”
The best finish was by the girls third varsity, winning a gold medal for the team. “The 3V4 had an impressive sprint that brought them from third to first in the last 20 strokes in the grand final, and from one of the slower lanes!” exclaimed head varsity girls Coach Holly Hatton.

The conditions were challenging, with strong cross and headwinds, putting some lanes at distinct disadvantages. Said Hatton, “I thought the girls crews did a great job. Having four of our five crews make the grand finals was [an] achievement.”
Hatton has been prioritizing her girls lightweight crew this season. “Our first varsity four was the stern four from our lightweight eight, so the fact that they made the finals against open-weight girls indicates a strong performance,” she said.
Novice rowers raced in the Novice Challenge Regatta on Saturday on the Merrimack River in Lowell. Both squads will come together for the Amber Zapatka Memorial Regatta in Lowell next weekend.
