The Great Food Walk

April 20, 2017

One-hundred and fifty-nine walkers covering a combined distance of more than 800 miles, with the help of nonwalking supporters, raised more than $14,000 in donations for the 33rd Great Food Walk, Friday, April 14, on a sunny morning.
The Great Food Walk—more commonly known as the Good Friday Walk, officially named Nashoba GFW Inc., and affectionately referred to as the Generous Feet Walk—is a walk by any other name to help end hunger locally. Ninety percent of the money raised is donated to Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, with the remaining 10 percent going to Sharing Inc.

Becca Day-Newsham, who has co-chaired the event with Jeanie Colony since 2010, explained the new name. The name Great Food Walk was adopted in part because the word “food” summed up both the intent of this charity-driven 5-mile walk, brought from Hingham to Harvard by a group of local women in 1984, and the mission to relieve hunger and provide hope through food by its primary recipient, Loaves & Fishes in Devens. The change was also made to invite and encourage a more diverse population of walkers.

Donations supporting the Great Food Walk continue either online through gfwalk.org/donation or by mailing a check to Nashoba GFW, 94 Jackson Road, Suite 105B, Devens, MA 01434.
