Ski teams finish season; boys secure league championship, girls place fifth

March 2, 2017

On Feb. 17 the Bromfield–North Middlesex ski teams finished the season at the Nashoba Valley Ski Area. The boys proved victorious and picked up the league championship while the girls ended the season in fifth place. Both teams were missing several key varsity skiers the Friday before vacation.

The girls placed fourth overall in the last meet of the year. Senior Grace Barton ended her high school career with her best-ever and first top-15 finish in 13th place while senior Natalie O’Leary also achieved her best record by finishing 26th. Sophomores Sage McFarland and Isabel Barton both achieved new records as well, finishing seventh and 20th, respectively. North Middlesex junior and captain Brigid Griffin finished one place ahead of Grace Barton in 12th.

The boys finished a strong third with an unusual lineup as two key varsity skiers were not present. Captain and senior Camden Maddalone achieved a personal record in slalom with a 12th-place finish while senior Tom Berthoud wrapped up his high school career with a record as well, placing 26th—his first top-30 finish. Jack Donaldson finished in fourth place; Justin Patenaude finished 19th; and Gavin Maddalone finished 27th. For both Patenaude and Maddalone, their season-ending finishes were personal records.

Seven skiers will be competing in the MIAA state championships on Tuesday, March 7. North Middlesex freshman Callum Hammill and Bromfield junior Benjamin Williams had already secured a spot for the states, while North Middlesex senior Brigid Griffin, McFarland, Donaldson, and Camden Maddalone managed to qualify for this meet after improving their runs and increasing their total number of points.

The girls team has ended its season with a 18–23–1 record, 37 accumulated points, and a score of 2,346. The first-place boys won the league championship with a 36–6–0 record, 72 accumulated points, and a score of 2,658.
