Since 1969 the Harvard Snowmobile Club has had the privilege of enjoying the wonderful trail system here in Harvard. Many of our original members back in the late 1960s worked hard to help create what we enjoy today. Our 2017 season just ended and all trails are now closed to snowmobiling in hopes for another snowy season next year. A big thank-you goes out to all our volunteers and the Conservation Commission, and a very special thank-you to all our landowners who allow the passage of snow machines on their property. We are grateful to all of you; this privilege is not taken lightly.
Before a single snow machine starts its engine, often not until January, several hundred volunteer hours are necessary starting in October to prepare the many miles of trails. Fallen trees and hazards are removed, many of the existing bridges get repaired, and miles of tall grass must be trimmed. Signs are posted and then we wait for the white stuff along with the many others that seek out the outdoor recreation that winter provides for us here in Harvard.
Whether you’re a cross-country skier, snowshoer, jogger, dog walker, bird watcher, or someone who rides those fat-tired bicycles, we all get to enjoy these beautiful trails throughout the winter months. A huge bonus to our trail system is the fact that our volunteers also provide a groomed trail so that we have a nice even layer of snow. Mark Shaw is our trailmaster, and he is also our senior groomer operator. He’s the best! While most of us are home enjoying dinner with our families at night or lounging by a nice warm fire, Mark is out there in the forest grooming those trails and seeing to it that we have the very best conditions.
Our 2017 season included a Christmas party, several big cookouts on the trail, a club trip to the state of Maine, a steak dinner, and lots of comradery and friendship. We urge anyone here in town who has an interest in snowmobiling to come join us. Our membership is made up of guys, girls, and families. You will get great support from us if you are new to this awesome form of winter recreation, and new members are always welcome.
