On Thursday, Jan. 12, the Bromfield girls basketball team lost to the Clinton Gaels by a score of 51–46. The game took place at 7 p.m. in the Bromfield gymnasium.
The Gaels’ overall record stood at 1–8 before the game, nearly identical to Bromfield’s 1–7, so the two teams were closely matched at the start. Freshman Callie Frackiewicz, sophomore Beatrice Wig, and seniors Emma Armstrong, Lexi Norcross, and Hannah LoChiatto started for the Trojans.
From the moment the buzzer sounded until the fourth quarter, Bromfield managed to stay ahead of Clinton by an increasing margin. The first quarter ended with a score of 14–12, the second with a score of 27–22, and the third at 41–35, all in favor of the Trojans. The Trojans dominated the court with strategic passes near their opponents’ basket, evading Clinton’s defense while also guarding their home side skillfully. On numerous occasions LoChiatto flicked the ball from a Gael’s grasp with well- timed jabs.
In the fourth quarter the Gaels made their comeback, surmounting the Trojans’ six-point lead and scoring two points almost every minute. Of the 16 points scored by Clinton that quarter, Alyssa Hatch, a junior, scored 13. Although Bromfield tried to retake its lead in the last minutes of the game, aiming to stall time through fouls, the Trojans were unsuccessful at the end of the night.
The entire match was ridden with fouls for both teams, with nine fouls for Bromfield in the first half and 12 in the second. Clinton had seven in the first half, and eight in the second.
The two high scorers of the night were Hatch for the Gaels at 34 points and LoChiatto for the Trojans with 16. Following the game, the Bromfield girls’ overall record stood at 1–8, with their league record at 0–4.
