A larger but younger 2016-17 Bromfield girls indoor track and field team lost to track powerhouse Littleton on Wednesday, Jan. 11, by a score of 37–54. The meet took place at Wachusett Regional High School.
The Trojans fared well in the sprint events. Junior Chloe Alfieri took first place in both the 55-meter dash and the 300-meter. Freshman Liza Toll also scored in the 55-meter dash, finishing third. In the 55-meter high hurdles, juniors Anya Begue and Cameron Hettich finished first and second, respectively.
But mid-distance and distance events proved challenging for Bromfield against staunch competition from Littleton. Freshman Tessa McClain placed third in the 600-meter and second in the 2-mile, while eighth-grader Hannah Beckman finished third in the 1,000-meter and second in the 1-mile. Fellow eighth-grader Helena Justicz rounded out the scoring in the distance events with a third-place finish in the 1-mile.
Bromfield did not score in either relay event or in the shot put; however, the team swept the high jump. Senior Grace Turnbull took first place, junior Sophie Beckman finished second, and Alfieri was third.
Historically, one of the biggest challenges facing the Bromfield indoor track team has been its size. In past years, the team has had as few as 12 athletes competing at meets, which made filling each event difficult. With more than 20 athletes on the team this year, Bromfield can easily fill each event.
As of Jan. 17, Bromfield’s season record stood at 2–2, with wins against Murdock and Ayer Shirley and losses to Littleton and Narragansett. The Trojans’ next meet was scheduled to take place at Shrewsbury High School on Wednesday, Jan. 18, against Lunenburg.
